Night Walk Through Rome

When you have small children, especially on vacation, you have to stick to the night time routine.  My kids are generally wiped out after a day of sightseeing, so typically after dinner we head back to the room for baths and downtime.  We rarely went out again after dinner--everyone was too tired and the kids went to bed.  But things are changing now that my girls are getting older, freeing Bob and I to do a bit more after the sun goes down. We are discovering all the cliches about cities after dark are true!  The city does take on a new rhythm after the masses of tourists have gone home for the night.
I purposely brought my tripod to Rome so I could practice my night time photography skills--I am no pro, but getting better. Many cities offer night time photography walks for this very purpose, check Trip Advisor for recommendations.

From the Termini Station we took the 40 express bus towards the Vatican City, get off at the stop Borgo Sant'Angelo.  This will allow you to photograph Sant'Angelo and walk up the commanding front entrance to St. Peter's.
The Vatican City was practically deserted allowing me to capture this shot without people, something I'd never be able to do during the day. While we are hardly "night owls" and you won't find us partying till the wee hours of the morning, we really enjoyed the peace and quiet of the city after dark. I read the city purposefully uses yellow light so the city will glow the way it would have during ancient Roman times when the city was lit with torches and lamps.  Here's to many more night walks!
