The Great Market Hall and Food
This is my last post about Budapest so I figured I'd better say something about the Great Market Hall which I loved and the food which was okay. I know taste is subjective, so feel free to take my words with a grain of salt.
Everything in Budapest has paprika in it. Do you even know what paprika is? It's nothing more than dried peppers. On the gourmet food channel they tell you where to buy fancy, authentic Hungarian paprika so I took the opportunity to buy some straight from the source. To do that we headed over to The Great Market Hall. I loved this place, it reminded me of a cleaner version of the Bazaar in Istanbul. There were all sorts of specialty foods, toys, leather goods and local crafts. I found that prices vary from stall to stall, so don't buy from the first stall you see.

I am not a big fan of their linens, but they are everywhere so I had to photograph them.
Ginger Ale where you could actually taste the ginger.
The most unique Cesar Salad we've ever eaten--it was good, but the dressing was anything but Cesar.
Gulosh--I know it's the Hungarian specialty, but we weren't big fans of all the gravy found in the meat dishes. Hungarian Food, at least the food we purchased is very heavy.

ReplyDeleteThere are two big types of Paprika, Sweet and Hot. Hungarian paprika is a lot better than the ones sold at your local Walmart....for obvious reasons. Some of this food is actually what inspires the Midwestern food of the U.S. which also features a good deal of gravy. I love goulasch and grew up with it. It would be too heavy to eat in the summer for me, but in the winter if you have low heat, it's wonderful. Which I think is how the food came to be heavy in the first place. I sometimes think Eastern Europe is for the "old souls". People who don't carry cellphones, like everything handmade and a very peaceful, old fashioned existence. Interestingly, if someone wants some good Hungarian desserts and Handmade embroidery linens there is a Hungarian community in Saint Louis. Mary, Queen of Victories church I believe and they sell these things on certain Sundays.

ReplyDeleteMoglai Porota (or maybe Mughlai Parantha) is one of the most sublime Indian or Bengali comfort foods that I know of. I don't know if the Mughals ever ate this tasty flaky fried dough interleaved with eggs, onions, green chilli and minced meat (keema). Whatever may be the source of this food, it has become an Indian favorite of all times. Making a good comfort food is no easy task for any chef. Crafting the thin crepe from a heavily leavened flour dough requires a skill that can be mastered by very few. This article provides you with a simple recipe that can be easily prepared in any kitchen.
