Munich Favorites!

Spring is a fantastic time to be in Germany if you are willing to put up with a little rain and rest assured you will get some, but the payoff is worth it! The rapeseed fields glow yellow, the chestnut trees are blossoming pink, spring flowers in pastel colors ornament the gardens and the blue sky is full of clouds making for dramatic scenic photographs.

Being back in the city was such a delight and a breath of fresh air after Saudi Arabia. With nothing but time to explore, wander and linger, I visited old favorites, took long walks and soaked in as much fresh air and temperate sunshine as possible. Below is a list of favorites for anyone visiting Munich this summer. Some may be popular with travel guides, but all are places locals enjoy.
1. Residenz--Favorite palace! Right in the heart of downtown, this palace is Munich's over the top luxury home. Click here for visiting times and admission fees.
2. Odeonsplatz--Hilter once gave rousing speeches in this open space, but today it is a delightful gathering spot. Cafes line the street, the yellow Theatiner Church is a whimsical baroque delight and with the Residenz near by there are lovely gardens with ample benches for sitting and reading a book or enjoying a snack.
3. Englisher Garten--Larger than New York's Central Park, Englisher Garten begs to be explored. Take a walk, watch the surfers at the Eisbach and enjoy the best biergarten lunch accompanied by Bavarian music at the Chinesischer Turm (Chinese Tower).
4. Universitat--The area around the LMU campus is full of affordable cafes, hip clothing shops and you can enjoy a little bit of history while your at it.  Visit the spot where brother and sister Hans and Sophie Scholl tossed anti-Hilter leaflets off the University roof. They were later executed for it, but today leaflets are sealed in stone where they landed, reminding us of the bravery of youth.

5. Olympic Park--The best multi-purpose park in the city. There are miles of trails for running, you can swim in the 1972 Olympic pool, row boats out into the moat, have dinner up high above the city in the tower or visit the aquarium. During the summer there is always something going on, be it Movie Night In the Park or the Summer Festival. Love, love, love this park.
6. Viktualian Market--An open air market selling food of every kind, this is a wonderful place to buy fresh flowers, cheese, sausages, gourmet vegetables and olives.
7. Alte Pinoktheke--The museum is under renovation through 2018, so parts of it are closed, but there are still quality pieces to be seen and a few odd balls like the one above. If you prefer the later half of the 19th century or modern art, there are 2 museums housing these collections nearby.
8. Nymphenburg Palace Garden Walk--It's not my favorite palace interior, but the grounds are splendid! A walk around this park is both pleasant and relaxing. Tree covered pathways lead to hidden fountains and other outbuildings. We like to grab a gelato before starting, it is lovely!
