Along The Way...

My mother is an adventurer! When I was growing up it was my mother who would take us to discover Antebellum homes and Civil War cemeteries. When we lived in Turkey she was up for the discovery of an unexcavated ruin, or shimmy-ing through underground tunnels. When we moved to Las Vegas she would take us on neighborhood home tours and then we'd go check out a new buffet on the Strip.  She will take the road less traveled, she will pull over to "check it out." I learned to be curious from her.

One thing I love about Europe is that around every bend in the road there is something new to discover--a quaint village, a watering hole, or castle. One benefit of living there is the chance to stop along the way to explore. On our drive to Plitvice Lakes we passed through Zagreb, the capital of Croatia and a few other towns and villages I don't even know the names of. Zagreb is not a very big city and its highlights can be seen in an afternoon. The other places we stopped at were literally "hop out of the car for a few minutes" type visits.
One pleasant thing about Zagreb is that it is not over run with tourists--as a matter of fact, it really doesn't feel like a tourist destination. While Zagreb has been a religious and cultural center for centuries, it has only been the capital since Croatia declared its independence in 1991.

This tiled roof is from the late 1800's and represents the Coats of Arms for different parts of the country.
After Zagreb, we came upon this outdoor museum dedicated to the Serbian/Croation War. They are in the process of building a facility to go along with it, but for now you can climb over old military machinery. The owner of the home we stayed in told us there is almost no one in the region that didn't lose something in the war, be it property or a loved one. It is still a difficult topic to discuss.

Lastly, this little village literally sits on the river. We actually found a swimming hole below the falls and Bob & Eden joined the locals for a short swim. Do you stop along the way?

  10. We really have to visit Zagreb. It looks gorgeous. We have to check out the prices as Europe is quite expensive to travel if there are no house sitting opportunities. #OurWorldTuesday #GreyWorldNomads
