A Walk Through Freiburg

Freiburg is the capital of the Schwartzwald or Black Forest. The quaint town is typical of Medieval German towns and worth a day visit if you are in the area, but not worth a special trip. We were in the area to buy a coo-coo clock, so we spent a few hours wandering around. 
The mosaics in front of a building indicate what kind of shop it is. The brass tabs in the sidewalk commemorate Jews who were taken from their homes, what camp they were sent to and when they died. It is a sobering reminder of mans potential for cruelty.

St Martin's Tower is one of the last remaining towers from the old city. At one time it served as the town prison. To the left and right of the Cathedral entrance you will find the official sizes of goods in the 1270's, including a  loaf of bread, bricks, floor tiles and wood beams. Buildings painted red indicated a place where you paid taxes during the Middle Ages.
The canal my family is straddling is a centuries old invention to prevent fires from spreading. In the event of fire they could be dammed flooding the street. It also provided fresh water for townsfolk and animals. Today they are maintained as the city's trademark, but don't serve any real purpose.

    This place is right up my alley. If there's a time in history that I want to go in the time machine, I always want to go to the Medieval times. Great shots.

    A typical beautiful German city - I've never been too, but heard about when living in Berlin. Love all the details, like the commemorative stones, and the narrow canal - what an idea!Thanks for sharing your trip to Freiburg! What is actually your favorite city/town in Germany?

    It's fascinating to see architecture that goes back to Medieval times, here in Australia a 150 years is considered really old!
