Day 1 Girl's Trip--Görlitz, Germany

It is not often that I take girls' trips...getting 4 families' schedules arranged and in line isn't easy, but back in October 3 girlfriends and I set out for an adventure to Poland to buy pottery.  And was it an adventure, we had loads of fun!

We left Munich around 10am and didn't stop until we reached Görlitz on the Germany/Poland border.  What a delightful town!  Görlitz is a favorite with Hollywood as a movie background because while the town architecture remains historic and intact it isn't on the tourist trail, so it's easier to get in and out.  The most recent movie filmed here was The Book Thief.
My friend Carla (you can read her blog here) pointed out that those windows in the attic look like eyes--creepy huh!  I took loads of pictures and many of doors.  It's been a while since I've seen so many great looking doors--I just love the rich colors.

We wandered through a cemetery with graves that dated from the 1600's.  It was a beautiful fall day and such a peaceful spot.

This square is featured in The Book Thief during the book burning scene. The rest of this post is a long pictorial of the city. Oh, and I have a  lunch recommendation (see below).  We found this small cafe tucked in the back of a courtyard--The service was very pleasant and the tomato soup I ordered was the best I've ever eaten! All of us were happy with our food selections. You can eat outside in the quiet courtyard or inside under low domed ceilings.  Enjoy the photos!

At the end of the day we piled back into the car headed for Boleslawiec, Poland where we had lots of fun planned.  Check back tomorrow for more on our trip Poland to shop for pottery.

    1. Thank you--the blue doors are a fav of mine too. I actually had to shut then and a man inside the church kept saying, open, open. In my best German I said, just a moment, picture, picture.

  2. The eye windows is indeed, creepy. Gorgeous location and your pictures are just fabulous. I loved reading the Book Thief but have yet to see the movie - I must move that up on the 'to do' list.

  3. Thank you! I haven't seen the movie either, but now I am motivated to see it. Should be interesting to see how it compares with the book.
