A Favorite Little Church in Anger, Germany

I love Salzburg (I've written about it herehere  and here), mostly because I LOVE the movie The Sound of Music. Every time  I hear the opening score from the SOM I'm transported to a happy place, my soul really is lightened.  Am I being a bit dramatic, perhaps?  But those arial shots in the opening scenes represent the beauty I dreamed about one day seeing in person and define what I've come to love about Southern Bavaria and Austria.  How I will miss these green mountains when we leave next year.

This sweet little church is on the road heading to Salzburg and I admire it every time we pass it. I was recently re-watching the Sound of Music for like the 1,000 time when it hit me that this favorite of mine just might be a church featured in the opening credits.  Instantly, I was determined to get a closer look to find out once and for all. My opportunity came while my mother was visiting back in August.  On our way home from Bertchesgaden, we decided to pull off the freeway and check it out.

The church is set on an artificial podium making it the highest point in the small village and while you can't see them well, there are sheep at the base--it was so charming. So, after analyzing my photograph carefully against the movie, I am happy to report, this IS the church in the opening credits!  How awesome is that!
World War I & II memorial.
There is a small cemetery just inside the church yard.  Most the tomb stones were from the last 50 years, so while the church looks old, the old dead aren't buried here.

  3. What a find! We did the SOM tour when we were in Salzburg ages ago. It was too whirlwind for us and we didn't really get to fully enjoy it. We did, however, 'found' St. Gilgen, which is just lovely. So, something good did come out of the SOM tour. :)

  5. Inspiring me to dig out the movie! Haven't watched it in a while. I am looking forward to when my girls are old enough to watch it! The first time I went to Europe we visited Salzburg and I twirled around in a field just like Julie Andrews! Such a great movie! What an adventure you having!
