Munich Monday: Train Ticket 101

My first advise is to get comfortable with navigating Munich's transportation website.  You can switch the language to English and from there you can view transportation maps, look at schedules and plan an itinerary.  You can also download an MVV app to your smart phone which will alert you of delays (which are often).  I use both all the time!

Now, the hard part--which ticket to buy.  If you are traveling alone and only planning an out and back trip, the Single Journey is your best bet.  It is good for 3 hours traveling in one direction, meaning if you were heading to Marianplatz you could stop at Karlsplatz first.  Just remember you have to buy a second ticket when you return home.  I learned this the hard way (and was slapped a €40 fine) my first month in Munich.
Single All Day is the ticket you need if you will be making three or more stops throughout the day.  You can use the u-bahn, s-bahn, bus or street car.  This is good for travel in both directions.
Children under 6 travel for free. Children between 6-14 travel for half price.
I like the Strip Ticket for a couple of reasons.  First, it never expires.  You can buy it today and it is valid until the last strip is used.  You can share it and lastly, it saves you a few cents over the single journey ticket.  Travel within Munich requires 2 stripes for adults and 1 for children and teens each way.  Just remember to validate your ticket before getting on the train.
The Partner All Day ticket is good for up to 5 adults traveling in a group.  Two children (6-14) count as one adult.  So, 4 adults and two kids could travel together all day using this ticket.
