Frauline Maria's Bike Tour of Salzburg

Not sure if I've mentioned how much I enjoy Salzburg. Honestly, it is perhaps more out of nostalgia  having grown up watching the Sound of Music.  I've known the SOM songs by heart my whole life and dreamed that one day I'd visit the place where Maria sang,  "I Have Confidence." Salzburg was the FIRST trip we took after moving to Germany 4 years ago.  It is a strange thing to realize a childhood dream.  The weather could not have been more perfect and our private Sound of Music tour with Bob's Special Tours was great. The green hills beaconed me to go higher!

We returned back to Salzburg when my niece came to visit and this time we did the Frauline Maria's Bicycle Tour.   Perfect for families, it is a really good way to see the city of Salzburg.  I was actually surprised at how many in our group were not SOM fans, but still joined the tour.  Like I said, it's a good way to see a lot of the city, fast.  There is only one hill which most the group walked up, so there is no need to fear that this may be beyond your skill level.
Aside from pointing out SOM movie locations, the guide was good to stop often allowing you to take photographs.

SOM fans will appreciate the Nonburg Abby gates.  This is where the Von Trapp children cried, "we want our Frauline back!"

And of course, how can anyone forget the lake scene where the children fall into the water much to the chagrin of their father.  We learned that in real life, the little girl playing Gretel could not swim and hated this scene.
Aww, the lovely Mirabell Gardens where the children sang and danced their way to these steps.  Salzburg is lovely in the late summer.  The manicured gardens are filled with bright colored flowers and the green is so verdant!  Can you tell, I love this city.  There are loads of things to do in the region as well like the salt mines, the ice cave and of course the Salzkammergut lake area is gorgeous!

  2. I did the SOM bus tour many many years ago. It would haven't a lot of fun, but most people on the bus were such diehards that they were singing SOM songs almost the whole time- so so loud and out of tune. It was painful to the ear. I love this idea of the bike tour. Definitely a more enjoyable wayto see the SOM sights and the city. Will keep this in mind when I return to Salzburg.

  3. It's been ages since I've been to Salzburg, and I think a SOM bike tour would be a wonderful way to get around to seeing everything. Thanks for the info and all the photos to tempt me.
