We loved our short trip to Poland and Krakow was just fantastic! The old city is surrounded by a wall, castle hill is adorned with beautiful gardens and churches, and its more recent history with World War 2 make it a fascinating city. Pair all that with delicious food and you've got a super worthwhile destination.

By happy accident we were in Krakow during the Summer Solstice festival. Different activities all around town were taking place; we were treated to a firework display, a medieval reenactment, a flea market and a bizarre chicken festival. Per our custom, we did the Rick Steves' city walk which actually does a very good job orienting you to the city. The next day we took a "free" walking tour and our guide took us to the same places Rick's tour took us and didn't really give any more pertinent detail, so I'd recommend sticking with Ricky--you can go at your own pace and it really is free.

I have one restaurant recommendation--it is close to the main plaza area and then a dessert shop. We discovered it while walking around the city. We made a tentative reservation thinking if we didn't find anything better we'd return and I am so glad we did. The food was Polish/Eastern European and I had no idea what to expect so we ordered a variety of things to try and all I can say is DELISH! I wish I'd written down what we ate because we were universally happy and left with very full tummies.

When you are ready for a treat, head over to the Cupcake Corner Bakery. This very freshly decorated bakery has cupcakes to die for! I am not normally a cupcake eater, but after sharing one with my daughter, we both agreed we needed our own--to NOT share. My husband didn't agree, but to be fair, he isn't a big treat eater and he definitely didn't appreciate the mountain of frosting topping each cupcake (you will leave with a sugar high--you've been warned). Also, he thought the prices were a bit high. He is big on value and to him a €3.50 cupcake was not a good value. Be that as it may, the girls and I loved it.

Like many European cities Krakow has an open plaza market area that fills with vendors during the day.

I have never been to Poland, and have been toying with the idea. I will def be showing this post to my Better Half so HE can "toy" with the idea too :)

I went to Krakow a long long time ago. What I found so fascinating was that the city was destroyed by the Nazi's , but then completely rebuilt. By chance have you ever been to the Oktoberfest parade. A girl friend of mine and I will be in Munich durning this time. Anyway, I had e-mailed a friend of mine who was native to the city, but she had never been. Wondering where the best place to view it from is! Saturday we will be spending at the festival, but on Friday we have open. If you only had one day in the city what would you go see.

Warsaw (Warszawa), Polish capital city, was completely destroyed by the Nazis, but then completely rebuilt. Kraków was saved, fortunately.
Kraków is beautiful and very old city; the former capital of my country. Great photos :-)
